Trade Talks Tuesday: Fluff Hardware on Handmade Growth, Retail Buying and Building Better Wholesale Relationships

Growing a handmade brand presents an interesting challenge: how do you increase production, open stores and build a national wholesale network without losing the character that made the business distinctive in the first place?

For Fluff Hardware founder Solymar Palm, the answer has been people. What began with a small tray of handmade jewellery in her living room in 2011 has grown into two retail storefronts in Boise, Idaho, a production studio in nearby Garden City and a wholesale programme supplying more than 520 accounts nationwide — all built and run by women.

That growth has also given Solymar an unusually broad perspective on the gift and accessories market. Operating across retail, wholesale, e-commerce and trade shows means Fluff Hardware isn't simply designing products for retailers; the team is also making buying decisions for its own stores and experiencing first-hand the commercial realities its wholesale customers face.

For this edition of Trade Talks Tuesday, we spoke with Solymar about scaling handmade production, what really matters when choosing products for a shop, why longevity is becoming more important to consumers and how independent brands can make life easier for busy retail buyers.

About Fluff Hardware

Fluff Hardware is a handmade jewellery brand founded by Solymar Palm in 2011.

Starting from Solymar's living room, the business has grown to include two retail storefronts in Boise, a production studio in Garden City and a wholesale programme serving more than 520 accounts nationwide. The women-led business now operates across retail, wholesale, e-commerce and trade shows.

Alongside its own jewellery, Fluff Hardware's stores stock gifts and products from other independent makers, giving the team experience on both sides of the buyer-supplier relationship. Its jewellery is designed for longevity and supported by a lifetime warranty.

Fluff Hardware has grown from a handmade jewellery brand into a business with two retail stores and a wholesale network. What have you learned about growing the business without losing the handmade identity it started with?

"I've learned that preserving our handmade identity comes down to the people."

My leadership team and staff are what have made this unbelievable growth possible.

The passion, creativity, resilience and integrity they bring to work every day ensure that every piece still carries the heart and quality we started with.

As both a maker and a retailer, you experience the buyer-supplier relationship from both sides. Has running your own stores changed the way you think about creating and selling products to other retailers?

Absolutely.

Running our own retail stores has absolutely impacted how we design and sell our products. Seeing both sides makes us a better partner because

"we know what retail buyers worry about: profit margins, lead times, branding and shelf appeal."

That real-world experience helps us design and make better products and support our wholesale partners with genuine empathy.

Alongside your own jewellery, your stores feature gifts and products from other independent makers. When you're buying for the shops, what makes a new brand or product stand out enough to earn a place on your shelves?

"It really comes down to three things: quality, novelty and branding."

We view these as a package deal.

Each element is equally important when deciding what earns a spot on our shelves.

You describe your jewellery as being made to last, and you back it with a lifetime warranty. Do you think customers are increasingly moving away from disposable products and looking for things they can keep and use for longer?

Absolutely.

It's hard to ignore the impact of waste today, and consumers are much more intentional now about how their dollars affect the planet.

"Our lifetime warranty is our commitment to keeping garbage out of landfills and oceans. Every piece counts."

Today you can reach wholesale buyers through marketplaces, direct relationships and digital channels. What role do trade shows — physical or online — play in helping independent brands build relationships with new retailers?

"I'd say trade shows play a critical role for independent brands."

by providing high-trust environments and visual and tactile product discovery that e-commerce simply cannot replicate.

Everyone would agree that

"seeing and feeling a product in real life makes for much easier decisions."

Having sat on both sides of the table, what's one thing you wish more independent brands understood before approaching a retail buyer?

"Time and attention are finite resources."

It is incredibly helpful when a brand provides an effortless shopping experience with all relevant details clearly stated upfront.

That said, we also love helping local, small independent makers who are entirely new to wholesale.

If someone comes to us with an exceptional product but lacks experience, we enjoy teaching them how a retail relationship works so they are set up for long-term success.

"Watching small brands grow from the ground up is one of the most rewarding parts of what we do."

Key Takeaways

  • Scaling handmade starts with the team. Protecting craftsmanship as a business grows depends on having people who understand and care about the standards behind the original product.

  • Retail experience can make brands better wholesale partners. Understanding margins, lead times, shelf appeal and other commercial pressures helps suppliers see their products from the buyer's perspective.

  • Quality alone isn't enough. For Fluff Hardware, quality, novelty and branding work together when determining whether a new product deserves shelf space.

  • Longevity can become part of a brand's sustainability proposition. Designing products to last — and supporting them with a lifetime warranty — provides an alternative to disposable consumption.

  • Physical product discovery still matters. Trade shows give buyers the opportunity to see, touch and assess products within an environment designed for building new commercial relationships.

  • Make buying easy. Clear information and an effortless ordering experience respect the limited time and attention available to retail buyers.

  • Wholesale inexperience doesn't have to be a barrier. An exceptional product and willingness to learn can still create opportunities, particularly with retailers willing to support emerging makers.

Fluff Hardware's position on both sides of the wholesale relationship offers a particularly useful perspective for independent brands. Retailers aren't evaluating products purely on creativity or aesthetics; they're considering how those products will perform within a real store, alongside margins, lead times, presentation and dozens of other buying decisions competing for their attention.

For emerging brands, perhaps the simplest lesson is one of the most useful: make the product compelling, but make the process of buying it easy too.
